Florida algae crisis: Mayors ask to expand state of emergency

Florida politicians are calling for action in hopes of opening up additional aid to offset the damage caused by the toxic algae blooms and red tide that persists in the region. Six mayors are asking the county to expand the state of emergency Gov. Rick Scott declared last month, to include more money for cleanup and businesses and individuals affected by the algae, as well as a public relations campaign. More from the Fort Myers News-Press.

Orlando retail jobs rate above national average

Orlando is beating the national average when it comes to more retail jobs. More than 66,000 retail jobs were created in the U.S. between last June to this July, according to the National Retail Federation. Timbers Resorts plans to move headquarters from Colorado to Winter Park

Resort company Timbers Resorts is planning to relocate its corporate headquarters from Colorado to Winter Park, a move expected to create 80 new jobs, according to Orange County documents pledging to reward the company with tax incentives. More from the Orlando Sentinel.

 An American flamingo egg was laid and successfully hatched at a South Florida sanctuary last week. Read more trending news The flamingo chick was hatched Aug. 1 at Flamingo Gardens Wildlife Sanctuary and weighed 88 grams.
